Brother Horan, the son of James and Catherine Mullin Horan, was born in Philadelphia, March 22, 1932.  Following graduation from Northeast Catholic High School and two years of study at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, he entered the Society of Jesus Feb. 1, 1955 and professed his first vows in 1957. After a short stint as a printer and tailor, Brother Horan received training in food service management. He then became a cook and food service manager for the Jesuit novitiate in Wernersville, Pa., from 1960 to 1967. He later served as business manager at Manresa-on-the-Severn retreat house near Annapolis, as a cook at Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda. He then went to Loyola High School in Towson where he spent 20 years as an administrative assistant.

Ill health forced Brother Horan to slow down but his compassion and concern for the well-being of others led him to continue to serve others. He was a long-time volunteer at Our Daily Bread, a hot meal program of Catholic Charities in Baltimore. Also, he was a pastoral minister for the Apostleship of the Sea at the Port of Baltimore, an organization of religious and lay ecclesial ministers who provide pastoral and practical assistance to the crews of ships visiting the port.
